| Barrett's
Esophagus
Professor Barrett first described
changes in the lining of the esophagus
that occur after prolonged irritation,
such as gastroesophageal reflux, or
chronic heartburn. It can lead to
esophageal cancer in a small, but
real percentage of patients. Fortunately,
the esophagus can be examined with
an endoscopy, and early changes can
be found so that cancer can be prevented.
